The Singing Dentist!
Dr. Kim is often known as “the singing dentist” as you might hear him singing, humming or whistling while treating patients. Music is part of his life and he feels very fortunate to share his music together with his family.
Grateful to have Dr. Horne with us!
Dr. Curtis Horne is a graduate of Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, where he attained a BSc in Science along with a Masters degree and then his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1996. Dr Horne operated a successful family practice in the Halifax-Dartmouth area for 20 years where his focus was excellent patient care.
Dr. Horne and his wife and son moved to Victoria six years ago. He had dreamed of living on the West Coast for many years. He and his family feel very grateful to finally be here enjoying life on this amazing island.
Clients of Hatley Dental will find Dr. Horne to be a knowledgeable, upbeat, and kind practitioner. His patient-centred care aligns perfectly with the philosophy of our practice. People will enjoy and appreciate not only his excellent clinical dentistry but also his gentle approach to his patients.

Grateful to have Dr. Jacobs with us!
Dr. Shawn Jacobs graduated from Dalhousie University in 1989, with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at age 23. He started his own practice from scratch in rural Newfoundland, where it soon grew rapidly.
With limited access to dental specialists, Dr. Jacobs travelled to many courses across North America and developed a special interest in helping his patients deal with their dental fear and anxiety. In 2001, he completed a 3-year dental anesthesia residency from the University of Toronto and obtained a Masters in Dental Anesthesia.
His research thesis investigated ways to reduce pain on needle injection. It was published in the American Dental Association Journal and presented at the International Association of Dental Research. He then completed a 3-month Oral Surgery internship in Dallas, Texas and briefly practiced in northern BC.
In 2003, his first child was born in Vancouver, BC. He and his wife then returned to Newfoundland to raise a family and start a new practice focused on sedation dentistry in St. John’s. Dr. Jacobs believes in quickly getting to the patient’s main concerns with a view to what will benefit their long-term dental health.
Dr. Jacobs held hospital dental privileges for over 25 years, providing pediatric and oral surgical procedures in an OR setting. In 2015 he returned to school and obtained a Masters of Medical Science from Quinnipiac University in the US.
In 2017, he relocated back to BC with his wife and 2 teenage children. He has always been an islander and feels that Victoria will permanently be his home away from home. His family enjoys the west coast weather and have settled into their new home.
Dr. Jacobs has recently been introduced to pickleball and plays every chance he gets. With his wide range of knowledge and experience in the field of dentistry and anesthesia, we are happy to welcome Dr. Jacobs to Hatley Dental.
Dr. Jacobs will compliment and help us expand the services that we offer while providing an option to have your dentistry performed in a relaxing, stress and pain free manner. Depending on the type of sedation you choose you may not even remember getting it done!
Grateful to have Dr. Kim with us!
Dr. Jimmy Kim graduated from the University of Toronto where he obtained an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology. He was then accepted to the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Dentistry. When graduating from UWO with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree, the school recognized him with an award for excellence in pediatric and special needs dentistry. He has also been actively involved in providing treatment in under-served and underprivileged parts of the world such as Honduras and The Dominican Republic through Medical Ministries International.
After completing his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, Dr. Kim continued his training in a General Practice Residency at the London Health Sciences Centre with significant focus on Pediatrics and Oral Surgery. This hospital-based program enabled him to learn and deal with emergencies, traumas and other unique dental treatments. Dr. Kim’s firm belief of providing patients with the most current, most optimal treatment encouraged him to further his training at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, for two more years. He extensively widened the scope of his dentistry, gaining experience in IV conscious sedation, dental implants, and impacted wisdom teeth extractions, just to name a few.
Dr. Kim then practiced in a private dental office in Barrie, Ontario prior to relocating to Victoria in 2008. Dr. Kim is a member of good standing of the Canadian Dental Association, College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, British Columbia Dental Association and Victoria and District Dental Society. In addition, he has been a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, Toronto Implant Study Club, Victoria Implant Study Club and completed the Hands-On-Training Implant Mini-Residency Program in Yorba Linda, California.
Through his intensive dental residency and fellowship experiences, as well as through his active involvement in continuing education programs, he is committed to providing his patients with excellent treatment in a warm, friendly environment.
